The villa also contains a large collection of DVD titles and a small library with English books. Feel free to relax by reading one our books outside, next to the swimming pool and watch a movie or a documentary when you're not feeling like exploring Rethymnon's nightlife.

The villa's kitchen is fully equipped. The villa's stairs lead to the second floor that houses the bedrooms and the bathroom. On the second floor's hallway there's a small coffee table, placed under the large sunroof which casts plenty of sunlight into the house even after late afternoon hours.

The bedrooms sleep 5 (five) people in total and you can find more information and pictures about them in the Bedrooms page or the Gallery page.

The bathroom, apart from the toilet and the bathtub contains a big, family-sized washing machine.

The villa's swimming pool and garden are completely private and are located in the backyard of the house. The door at the back of ground floor leads to this very large open area which also contains a large terrace with another fully equipped kitchen and a barbecue grill.

You can enjoy the villa's swimming pool and garden at any time, even at night, as it is surrounded by elegant light poles. The high Cretan trees, plants, vegetation and bamboo fences, shield the pool and garden's view completely from the neighboring houses, providing complete privacy and beautiful green surroundings. You can visit our Gallery for more images.

Just outside the ground floor of the villa, there's an outside modern shower and toilet. If you are enjoying the villa's outdoor activities, you don't have to go inside to visit the toilet or have a shower. Everything you need is within reach. After all, you can cook outside, organize a family barbecue, or have a nap under the cool shadow of our garden trees.

The garden not only provides a great relaxing and serene background scenery, but it also provides a cool shadow shelter for those famously hot Greek afternoons. The villa's garden is full of Cretan flowers, plants and trees but its centerpiece is the large, glorious oak tree at the edge of the garden, surrounded by a stone pedestal. Under the oak tree you can find a small coffee table, ideal for a relaxing chess or backgammon game amidst the guaranteed summer breeze of the garden.

Overseeing the swimming pool and the garden is the villa's large terrace. The terrace houses a fully equipped kitchen with a fridge and freezer, an electric cooker and a barbecue grill. You can organize a BBQ event with family and friends with local, fresh Cretan meat you can buy directly from one of the village's butcher shops. The terrace also has a large dining table and is protected from the strong Greek midday sun with a tent.

Area

Car: necessary

The village of Prines was a central place during the Venetian occupation of Crete. The church of St. Nicolas at the edge of the village dates from the 13th century. It may be a small, traditional and quiet village, but all the necessary shops and facilities can be found there, including:

Two supermarkets

A traditional coffee place and a taverna

A butcher's shop with Cretan, top quality, meat

A shop with Cretan dairy products and honey

A gas station

The village itself is surrounded by nature and is ideal for people who like quiet and traditional places. Also the town of Rethymnon is very close, offering many and diverse opportunities for entertainment and night life. Also, Rethymnon, being at the gravity center of Crete, is the ideal base and starting point for your exploration of the beautiful island of Crete.

Specifically, the village of Prines is seven (7) minutes away from the center of the town of Rethymnon (central Crete) and another seven (7) minutes away from the beautiful beach of Episkopi. All the other parts of Crete, Chania, Heraklion, and Agios Nikolaos are just a short drive away. Specifically, Chania is 40 minutes away, Heraklion 1 hour, and Agios Nikolaos 1 hour and 40 minutes. Although there are public transportations available to tour around Crete we highly recommend that you rent a car as this is the most convenient and quick way to explore Crete.

Additional historical data about the village of Prines are recorded by Barozzi (1577) and by Kastrofilakas (1583) as "Prines and Dependencies", and by Vasilikatas (1630). With a population of 430, in the censuses of 1881 the village is ascribed to the Municipality of Atsipopoulo, with approximately 520 inhabitants, while since 1928 Prines is known as the birthplace of Markos Kaloudis, a member of the revolutionary "Holy Company" who distinguished himself in battle at Dragatsani and Frangokastelo. Kaloudis died in 1886, having left his entire estate to the District of Rethymnon, to fund the education of local born teachers.

The village is noted for its picturesque alleyways and the traditional stone houses; Other local attractions include the Bemboyiannis Mill and a traditional olive press.

The municipal ward of Prines extends to the small village of Vederi, known for its Venetian buildings. A magnificent stone-threshing floor is visible to the right of the road linking the two villages.

The Church of Agios Antonios (1833), featuring icons by Ioannis Stathakis, is also well worth visiting.

Retired mother of two. I love traveling, eating and cooking. I'm also a winter swimmer, which would be more impressive if Crete weren't sunny and warm all year round :)
